Coughing can happen for many different reasons. Common triggers include:

  • Smoke and air pollution
  • Dust and pollen
  • Allergies
  • Certain medications
  • Respiratory infections
  • Lung conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

A cough is not always a sign of illness. In many cases, it is simply the body’s way of protecting the airway.

How Does the Body Detect Foreign Particles?

Inside our throat and airways, there are special sensors called cough receptors. These receptors are designed to detect irritation or the presence of unwanted substances.

Our airways are also covered with a thin layer of mucus. This mucus helps trap dust, germs, and other particles before they can travel deeper into the lungs.

When we breathe in and a foreign particle enters the airway, the cough receptors quickly sense it. At the same time, the particle may become trapped in the mucus layer. (See above image)

How Does the Brain Control a Cough?

Once the cough receptors detect irritation, they immediately send signals to the brain through nerves. The brain receives this information and understands that something unwanted has entered the airway.

The brain then sends signals back to the muscles involved in breathing, especially the muscles in the chest and abdomen, telling them to create a powerful cough.

A cough happens in several quick steps:

  1. A deep breath is taken to prepare the body.
  2. The muscles in the chest and abdomen contract strongly.
  3. Air is pushed out forcefully through the airway.
  4. The rushing air carries trapped particles and mucus out of the body.

This powerful action helps clear the airway and prevents harmful substances from reaching the lungs.

How Fast Can a Cough Travel?

A cough can produce a very fast burst of air. The speed of air expelled during a cough can reach around 80 km/h (50 mph), helping move mucus and trapped particles away from the respiratory system.

A cough may seem like a simple action, but it is actually a complex defense mechanism controlled by the brain and respiratory system. From detecting foreign particles to forcefully removing them, every step helps protect our lungs and keep our airways clear.
